Real Fear

A photographer was present in Vietnam when these children ran from their burning homes. Their faces show the same expression of real fear that would be shown on any human face, regardless of time or place. Both faces show the same expression. Their nervous systems were experiencing actual fear.

During the Elian Gonzalez Raid, a photographer was incongruously present to record the emotions of these people. The young boy's face expresses the real fear that he is feeling. The adult's face shows only attention. The reality of the fear that the child expresses in the photographs is attested to by the emotional reaction that an observer feels when viewing the photograph. Such an emotional reaction is not felt in an observer of a posed or mimicked expression.
