Maps

(CLICK ABOVE TO SEE LESSON PLAN)

The class made maps of their own classroom.  At the end of the lesson,  a class visitor used the maps they created to find objects in the room like the teacher's desk and the puzzles.

Fire Safety

During Fire Safety week, the class learned what they can do to help themselves and others in the event of a fire.  To start the lesson, I introduced the book No Dragons for Tea by Jean Pendziwol.

Morning Meeting in a Responsive Classroom

(CLICK ABOVE TO SEE A SAMPLE LESSON PLAN)

Each morning students gather on the carpet for morning meeting.  During morning meeting, students greet one another to get ready for a new day, read the morning message as a class, and participate in an activity.  I found morning meeting to be an excellent method to encourage students to form friendships and build a sense of community within the classroom.  This can be accomplished by doing little things such as shaking one another's hand, making eye contact, and saying good morning.

Unit on Plants

(CLICK ABOVE TO SEE A SAMPLE LESSON PLAN)

These grassheads represent our culminating activity to conclude a thematic unit on plants.  Students planted the grassheads in knee highs, named their grasshead and wrote a story titled A Day in the Life of (first name) Grasshead.  The students were required to use a writer's checklist and the writing process to create the story.
