Putting Into Practice What We've Learned!

TOPIC:

Students have been observing current weather, measuring temperature, noting clouds and precipitation.  Now, they must put what they have learned into practice.  Students will have the opportunity to translate given weather situations, into information that will affect their daily activities.

RATIONALE:

Listening to a weather report is one thing, but understanding terms and how they affect what a student wears, and the activities he/she does, is another.  Students will have had practice reading thermometers and interpreting the daily weather they are experiencing.  That, in combination with mom helping to select the clothes, does not give students’ a hands on experience they can apply to seasonal periods.  This lesson should help them put this into practice.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:

Students will make connections to the weather forecast on television, what they see and feel when they leave in the morning, and what mom has them wear, with the observations they have been recording.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Learning Objective- Students will demonstrate understanding of key weather signs in relation to daily life, by answering a series of questions for differing situations.

a. Behavioral Objectives – Students will be able to read given weather situations, and draw conclusions and inferences from this information.

Assessment – Completion of questionnaires, based on differing information in which students need to read, interpret and draw conclusions from, in order to answer.

HOOK:  The arrangement of the room.  The room will be divided into five different areas, in which students will take turns at each center.  Each group will be responsible for answering questions, and discussing the information.

ACTIVITIES:

See attached.

QUESTIONS & EXAMPLES:

Today, you are going to be meteorologists.  You are going to visit each weather center, and read your equipment, to create your forecast.  You must work together with your group, to read the keys and information, and talk about what you think it means.  Once you interpret the information, and figure out which season this is, and then answer the questions for each center.  After each group is done, you will give the report (answers) to the rest of the class.  Each group will tell about one station.  Each person needs to participate.

CLOSURE:  Students will complete the group sheets.  Each group will pick a center (or a number out of a hat) and share what they have found.  The other groups will agree or disagree, and take their turn with a different center.

INDIVIDUALIZATION:

Students will be working within groups.  Some children are known to have difficulties working with specific other children.  We will try to group accordingly.  Those students that have difficulty in group work in general, will also be carefully selected within groups.
